Data can be both informative and beautiful. And powerful.

数据蕴含着大量信息,可以很美,也可以很震撼。


I worked with mountaineer photographer David Breashears to quantify glacier meltdown in the Himalayas and Karakoram regions visually. With the Main Rongbuk Glacier in the valley of Mt Everest thinning over 300 feet, the iconic Statue of Liberty, as a reference, illustrates so well the scale of change over a 80-year time frame.

大多数冰川都在融化,但大多数人对于冰川退缩的速度和尺度没有清晰的概念,这里有图有真相,几十年间一些喜马拉雅的冰川不仅退缩,而且整体变薄100米左右:

Sometimes techniques used in video editing can be applied to photo editing to great effects. Here below is an example where I borrowed from a video technique and used it to make a graphic illustration about the GDP growths of the world’s two largest economies going from $1 trillion to $10 trillion:

视频剪辑中的一些技法让我想到了如何能把这些动画效果嫁接到图片中,于是在两者之间寻找了一些灵感,做了一些尝试。下面是中国和美国两个世界最大经济体从一万亿美元的GDP增长到十万亿的轨迹,简而言之:中国用的时间是美国的一半:

We looked at the historical carbon dioxide emission data and here below is a chart of CO2’s two centuries of ups and downs, with a few select major economies. Tap here for an interactive version of the chart:

工业革命以来的两百多年的历史是人类文明突飞猛进的篇章,同时也是温室气体排放的爆发式增长期,下图勾出了几个重要经济体的二氧化碳排放的200年历史,美国(红色)1888年赶超英国(绿色),大约2005年达到峰值,而中国(蓝色)正好这时赶超美国,并进一步高歌猛进:【点这里看互动版

Asia would have surpassed the United States as the world’s largest cumulative CO2 emitter by 2016. (In the chart below, the leogryph icon, from the Asia Society logo, in the orange background represents Asia)

研究气候变化数据过程中的一个小发现:从二氧化碳的历史累积排放量来讲,美国依然是稳坐第一把交椅,中国大约是美国的一半;不过如果亚洲所有国家加起来的话,2015年就刚刚超过了美国了:

Once known as the “Bicycle Kingdom,” China is soon to top off the U.S. with the largest car fleet in 15 or so years. If the estimates that the U.S. fleet is plateauing or even going down after 2030, then it won’t be surprising that China’s fleet will be double that of the U.S., if not more. 中国这个曾经的自行车王国,很快就要成为汽车王国了,2015年中国的轿车保有量达到1.7亿量,美国轿车保有量2.3亿,15年内中国赶超美国基本没有悬念,而如果根据很多预测说美国的汽车保有量将不增或反降的话,到2050年中国的保有量差不多能超过美国的两倍。(中国正在大力发展电动汽车产业,不过预计到2025年中国电动车保有量也就1400万辆,也就所有轿车的5%左右,这里任重道远…)
